IC CHARACTERISTICS:
CURRENT CANON POINT: End of Season 2
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Matt is in his mid-thirties, roughly 5’10” with short brown hair and hazel eyes. He tends to sport a bit of stubble, though his hair is always combed and he wears nice clothing of good quality - suits and ties, nice jeans and t-shirts or henleys. When with company or outside his cabin, he also wears red-tinted or dark glasses with round lenses and wire frames, and carries his folding cane with him, even if he’s not using it. He also has several scars from knife wounds: notably at least three on his back, three on his stomach/sides, and two on his upper chest.

Reference pictures (mildly nsfw): 1 2 3 4

All of these are easily hidden under normal clothing.

Matt generally smells clean and not like any scent in particular - because of his heightened sense of smell, he doesn’t like scented products. His speech is typically on the quieter side, relatively calm and even, though he can certainly get riled up and turn passionate under the right circumstances (those circumstances are often but not exclusively when he’s Daredevil). Particularly when he is Daredevil, his voice gets deeper and rougher, likely at least in part (but not entirely) to prevent recognition. He also speaks what appears to be relatively fluent French and Spanish, and possibly some Punjabi.
DEMEANOR: Because Matt is blind, he doesn’t squint, flinch, or tend to look around rooms. He’s fairly adept at “looking at” someone when talking face to face, but his gaze will often be just a bit off, sometimes fixed to the side of a character’s face or on their forehead, nose, or chin, rather than specifically their eyes. He also doesn’t follow a character’s eyes or face as they talk - once he finds a direction to “look,” he tends to stick with it. This gets more obvious when he’s not wearing his glasses - he tends to look like he’s staring off into the distance and his eyes don't change points of focus; again, he doesn’t look characters in the eyes even if he’s looking at their face. He’s still capable of making understandable and recognizable expressions - smiling, raising his eyebrows in surprise or disbelief, for example - and understands colors and other visual concepts even if he can’t see them, given that he wasn’t blinded until he was nine.

Matt relies heavily on his hearing and touch in place of his sight. He’ll often stand or sit with his head tilted down or to the side, clearly listening instead of looking. He uses his cane to navigate hallways and public areas, though in familiar places, he might instead simply feel his way along a wall or use furniture as landmarks - most notably, he’s extremely comfortable in his apartment and doesn’t use the cane there at all. He’s got a good memory and will eventually memorize much of the Barge, including number of doors per hallway, turns to various locations, and stairs.

When he’s Daredevil, he still retains some of this behavior - most noticeably, he tends to stand with his head tilted down or cocked sideways. He still looks off into the distance, but it’s pretty impossible to tell with his eyes and much of his face covered, so he’ll generally appear to be looking someone in the face even if he’s not. He also projects a much better approximation of a sighted person, able to run, jump, climb ladders and stairs, and navigate other obstacles without difficulty or hesitation.
ABILITIES: Matt’s hearing, taste, touch, and smell are dialed up to 11 million. He can make out individual people’s heartbeats in a relatively large room and overhear conversations taking place within at least several city blocks when he concentrates; he’s a bit of a human lie detector, using heart rate to determine when someone is telling the truth. He can also tell what someone had for lunch a day ago and the last time they showered based on scent. Matt has the ability to make out individual ingredients in foods and sometimes feel the impressions left on paper by writing. All of this culminates into what he essentially says is a 360-degree picture of the world, coming at him from all directions, despite the fact that he doesn’t see it the way other people do.

This picture includes the ability to read negative space and electrical currents, allowing him to sometimes tell when something (a drawer, a room, a train car) is empty or full, and even get a vague picture of what might be inside it. He can hear the hum of electricity as well.

As mentioned above, this allows him to fake being a sighted person physically pretty well when his eyes are covered. He’s able to run, jump, and otherwise maneuver just fine. He can also catch projectiles thrown at him and throw things of his own with pinpoint accuracy.

Additionally, Matt is extremely physically fit and and excellent at hand-to-hand combatant. He’s trained in fighting since he was about ten and also specializes in the use of two small sticks as weapons, including the ability to ricochet them off several surfaces to hit a moving target. He’s able to take an excessive amount of physical damage and keep going, and he heals somewhat quicker than the average human if he meditates.

Underneath it all, though, he is an otherwise baseline human with the same basic limitations and weaknesses. He can be knocked out and incapacitated, even if it seems to take an awful lot of damage to do it. His senses can also be confused or blocked, such as by controlling or hiding a heartbeat, or throwing him into a downpour or the snow (the latter seems to be more of a comics thing, but I think it’s still pretty reasonable).
MEDICAL INFORMATION: Physically blind (his pupils are completely nonresponsive to light), can heal himself quickly (such as bruising and cuts over the course of several days or a week) through focused meditation. Matt has several scars (see above) that are hidden by most normal clothing and has likely suffered numerous broken bones and dislocations in the past, though there is no obvious physical evidence of these.
CABIN INFORMATION: Matt’s door is extremely well worn; it’s two-tone, painted a darker green that runs about a third of the way up and a lighter green on the remaining portion, with a dark green frame. The number 6A is stenciled on in black, with what looks like a much larger, graffiti 6 scrawled underneath it.

Inside, his apartment is a one-bedroom space with a relatively open floor plan. The front door opens directly into a narrow hall that leads left, with a multi-paned window on the right. It’s a short walk down the hall into the rest of the apartment: there’s a living space with a coffee table, couch, and two chairs; a small kitchen table with two chairs; and a relatively well-equipped if sparse kitchen separated from the living areas by a counter with the sink.

The single bedroom has a sliding door and contains a queen bed and a wardrobe; there’s also one bathroom to the left of the bedroom and underneath a set of stairs leading up to a second-floor entrance that would, under normal circumstances, lead to the building’s roof. There’s also a set of double doors near the bathroom, though these don’t appear to lead anywhere. The apartment has several large multi-pane windows, which of course look out onto the starfield of space on the Barge. He doesn’t have any curtains, but he does have lights that he’ll turn on for the benefit of other characters.
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS: Matt is a religious man (Catholic) and he abhors the idea of killing. He’s got a fairly straightforward sense of morality. He doesn’t avoid difficult subjects or issues he doesn’t like, but he will argue passionately for his viewpoints.

IC PERMISSIONS:
MENTAL: Yes, though I prefer to know about it ahead of time, because mental invasion might have implications for certain secrets he’s trying to keep (i.e., his identity as Daredevil).
MIMICRY: Yes
VIOLENCE: Please do, but expect it right back
MAGIC: Yes
DEBATE: Absolutely
OTHER / NOTES: Matt’s abilities can be considered somewhat invasive; a permissions page regarding what he can and can’t pick up from your character’s scent, heartbeat, and other characteristics is here.
